Gerry Whelan Memorial Weekend

The 14th Gerry Whelan Memorial Weekend will take place in Cootehill, Co. Cavan starting on Friday the 14th of September. It is a festival of music, singing and dancing remembering the Mohill accordion player and lilter, Gerry Whelan that has become firmly established as one of the highlights on the Co. Cavan annual calendar of events. The Gerry Whelan event started on July 8, 2005, with a memorial concert and since then has become an annual weekend event that has grown from strength to strength over the years.

There are a lots of great events happening over the weekend which are listed in the programme including a Memorial Concert, Music Workshops, Caint agus Comhrá, Singing/Storytelling, Street Music, Rambling House, Folk Club and Pub Sessions.

Friday evening at 8pm in the Drumlin Theatre will see the Memorial Concert and Official Opening by Heather Humphreys, Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation. Guest artists appearing will include Pat Mc Cabe with Micheal Curran, Ronan Warnock and Fergal Mullen; Barry Conaty 2017 Double All Ireland Flute and Tin Whistle Champion; The Rafter School of Dancing; Cootehill CCE Junior Group; Ray Lawlor, Mickey McDonnell and friends; plus visiting artists.

A series of Workshops will be held on Saturday in St. Michael’s Hall between 10am and 1pm. The workshops and tutors will be for Fiddle: Noreen McManus; Tin Whistle: Sean Walsh; Button Accordion: Michael Curran; Banjo: Daithi Kearney.

The fee for a place on one of the Workshops is €10 (a Family Discount is available). These workshops are a great opportunity to learn from some of Ireland’s most talented musicians. To book your place on one of the workshops, please visit Workshop Info & Registration.

The workshops will be followed by a tutor led session in Drumlin House at 2.30pm, other musicians are welcome to join in. There will be lots of other great entertainment to follow with music, singing and dancing for all the family to enjoy.
