The Hinterland Festival of Literature & Arts takes place annually in Kells, Co. Meath, on the last weekend in June. The festival began life as the Hay/Kells Festival in 2013, in collaboration with the Hay (Wales) Literary Festival and in 2017 evolved into Hinterland and have now run numerous events under this name.

Since 2013 guests appearing have included all the leading Irish fiction writers including Colm Tóibín, Sebastian Barry, Roddy Doyle, Anne Enright, Joseph O’Connor, John Boyne, Liz Nugent and a number of major UK writers and artists including Germaine Greer, Jung Chang, Jeremy Paxman, Brian Eno, Ben Okri, Hanif Kureishi, Jeannette Winterson, Louis de Bernières.

This years Festival will bring together the best Irish and international authors and thinkers to celebrate the sharing of stories and ideas including Alan Shatter, Anne Griffin, Barry Devlin & Jim Lockhart, Cecelia Hartsell, Chris Mullin, Christy Lefteri, Danny Diamond, David McCullagh, Diarmaid Ferriter, Fintan O’Toole, Frank McDonald, Gareth Russell, Gerry Daly, Hugo Hamilton, Jane Casey, Jason Byrne, Jennifer Farley, Jim Fitzpatrick, Juanita Browne, Kelly Gartland, Liam McNiffe, Lindie Naughton, Liz Nugent, Luke Harding, Luke O’Neill, Margaret Kelleher, Martina Fitzgerald, Matthew Gilsenan, Matthew Spangler, Myles Dungan, Nick Hewer, Oisin McGann, Olivia Kiernan, Owen O’Doherty, Patricia Byrne, Paul Mason, Philip Boucher Hayes, Richard O’Rawe, Robbyn Swann, Sadhbh Devlin, Seámus Ó Conaill, Sean Whelan, Sináad Gleeson, Stacey Halls, Tom Dunne, Tom French and Tony Bucher.

There will also be live entertainment and a dedicated children’s programme, as well as workshops, walks, culinary events and pop-up book shops.
