A highlight of the Imagine Arts Festival in Waterford is the annual John Dwyer Trad Weekend which takes place from the 18th until the 20th of October and is set to be a highlight on the Imagine Arts Festival events schedule, which takes place in Waterford City from the 18th until 27th of October.

The John Dwyer Trad Weekend will have a strong traditional music and dance programme with a gala concert starring the man himself, John Dwyer (Fiddle) and Galway fiddle-playing siblings Liz & Yvonne Kane, Máiread Hurley & John Blake Concertina and Flute), Theresa O’Grady & Declan Payne (Banjo and Piano Accordion), Damien O’Reilly & Caoilfhionn Ní Fhrighil (Accordion and Concertina), Irene Cunningham (Sean-nós Dance) and Nell Ní Chrónín (Song).

Sean-nós singer Ann Mulqueen, singer and accordion player Breda De Paor, internationally acclaimed uilleann pipe player David Power and poet Mark Roper will host a very special evening ‘In High Places’ a unique collaboration between musicians and a poet, based around the mysteries of the Comeragh Mountains.

On Saturday the 19th between 11am and 2pm there will be a series of Workshops which will cover Fiddle, Concertina, Accordion, Banjo, Flute, Sean-nós Dance and Traditional Singing. The Tutors for the workshops are Liz & Yvonne Kane, Máiread Hurley, Damien O’Reilly, Theresa O’Grady, John Blake, Irene Cunningham and Nell Ní Chrónín. The Workshops will be held in Gaelscoil na nDéise.

During the John Dwyer Trad Weekend, there will be traditional music sessions occurring throughout the city in the local Pubs. Participating in them will be some of Ireland’s finest musicians. These sessions will be happening at different times, day and night, and are marvellous free entertainment open for all to attend. All musicians are invited to join in one of the many sessions or initiate their own.
