This January sees the 6th annual Letterkenny Trad Week which will take place from January 19th to 26th. This festival brings some of the world’s finest traditional musicians from Ireland, England, Scotland and the United States to Donegal to perform in seven brilliant concerts and a play. Six of the concerts will be at the Regional Cultural Centre with the final one being at the An Grianán Theatre which will also be hosting the play ‘Trad’ on the Thursday night.
Letterkenny Trad Week kicks off at the RCC on Saturday 19th with the acclaimed Irish folk artist Lisa O’Neill with an evening of raw, true folk songs. Also on stage will be Lemoncello who are Laura Quirke and Claire Kinsella, two Irish musicians from Carlow and Letterkenny respectively, who became friends while studying at Maynooth University. They make music together using four fundamental ingredients — a guitar, a cello and two voices.
Monday night will see Anxo Lorenzo, Jim Murray, Dónal O’Connor & Jack Talty on stage. These are a quartet of Galician and Irish artists who have made a massive contribution to music, in both local and international arenas.
The Donegal family group, Clann Mhic Ruairi, will be performing with special guests on Tuesday night. Then on Wednesday night you will have the chance to enjoy a performance with harpist Laoise Kelly and Uilleann Piper Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn with support from The Straddy Sessions. Fridays concert will see Xylouris White playing Cretan music of original and traditional composition and Navá, a group of young musicians exploring the relationship between the ancient musical cultures of Ireland and Persia.
Saturday nights concert, will see Paul Harrigan launch Music from the White Stone which explores music from the Honoria Galwey Collection, the Donegal fiddle repertoire and also features some of his original compositions. Paul will be joined by highly-regarded multi-instrumentalist Tim Edey, his wife Roisin (McGrory) Harrigan and other special guests for the launch.
The week comes to an end on a high note, with legendary button accordion player Sharon Shannon, who will be performing at the An Grianán Theatre on Sunday night.
