In her bilingual book Scéalta agus Seanchas - Potatoes, Children and Seaweed,
published in 2019, Áine Uí Fhoghlú tells the stories of twenty-one members of the older
generation in her own Irish-speaking area of County Waterford. These were people who
witnessed the coming of electricity, running water and radio and who had for the most part
lived simple fishing or farming lives in the early part of the twentieth century. This was a
time when all work was carried out by the meitheal, or team of neighbours, when the
community celebrated a new birth and together they mourned each death. Of particular
interest at this time of year are the accounts given in the book concerning the traditional
customs of Hallowe'en.
