The 2018 Fleadh Nua in Ennis promises to be an exciting festival, full to the brim with Concerts, Céilithe, Sessions, Street Entertainment, CD Launches, Recitals, Irish Language Classes, Set Dancing Competitions, Sean-Nós Dancing Competitions and Performances, Story Telling, Singing Sessions, Workshops and much more.

Since 1974, Fleadh Nua has been held annually in Ennis and has developed from a 3 day event to a festival spanning 8 days, with more than 120 separate events, many of them free of charge, where there is a welcome for everyone.

There will be more than 60 pub sessions happening during Fleadh Nua week

There are many Irish traditional festivals organised throughout the summer months but there are few people who will dispute that Fleadh Nua which started in Dublin in 1970, is the forerunner of them all. The concept of bringing together concerts, céilithe, music, song and dancing workshops, street entertainment, and much more was innovative in its time. Today, it’s still a winning formula, as evidenced by the thousands of visitors who flock to the festival every May for a week of unsurpassed traditional entertainment.

While the town of Ennis has lost nothing of its warmth and welcome since Fleadh Nua was first held there in 1974, one thing that has definitely changed is the time it takes to get to the capital of Co. Clare. With the new motorway network connecting directly to the town, Dublin is now only 2½ hours away by car. There are also rail links to Ennis from Limerick, Cork, Galway, Dublin, Waterford and Tralee. Shannon International Airport has connections Ennis, operated by Bus Éireann and Citylink, connecting the town to all the major population centres in the country.

The Michael Dwyer Festival is an annual traditional music festival organised in honour of the late Michael Dwyer, a renowned tin whistle and fiddle player from Ardgroom, Beara, Co. Cork.

This year marks the 20th year of the festival, and the 21st anniversary of Michael Dwyer’s death. An exciting programme of traditional music sessions and intimate performances has been organised for the weekend at various venues throughout the village.

The Festival commences on Friday evening at 6pm with an Art Exhibition by Allihies Artists in the Hostel. This will be followed by the opening of the Finn Harper Art Exhibition in the Copper Mine Museum at 7pm.

Music will commence at 8.30pm in O’Neills with Manus Maguire & Emily Flack. Then at 10.30pm Two Time Polka will be on the outside stage at The Light House Bar.

Saturday sees a full programme of events starting with a series of Workshops. The workshops and tutors will be for Singing: Emily Flack; Fiddle: Eoin O’Sullivan; Whistle: Mary Donegan. These will be followed by a Tin Whistle Competition in the Hostel at 12noon.

A lunch time session with Moya Fitzgerald, Liam Lyons, Seanie Hogan, Donal & Katie Lyons will commence at 2pm in the Lehanmore Community Centre. This will be followed at 3.30pm by a ‘Dance performance by young people’ at Jimmy’s.

Reel Women will be performing in O’Neill’s starting at 4pm and at 5.30pm it will be the turn of the Cork Singers Club at Jimmy’s.

A celebratory concert in honour of Michael Dwyer will take place at Allihies Copper Mine Museum featuring John Dwyer, Richard Dwyer & Robert Dwyer, Matt Cranitch, Jackie Daly, Manus Maguire, Emily Flack, Mary Donegan, Sean Wholihan & Liam Sherry.

At 9pm the Ceili All Stars will be playing in Jimmy’s and at the Lighthouse Bar, Mike Walsh, Shane Meehan & Jon Hicks will be in session with John Dwyer & Carol Leader being in session at O’Neill’s.

Sunday will start with a lunchtime concert at 1pm in the Hostel featuring Sean Wholihan & Liam Sherry. Later on in the day at 4pm Richie Dwyer & Richard Lucey will be in session at Jimmy’s. Early evening will see a ‘Local Session’ in O’Neill’s at 6pm. Then at 9pm there will be Matt Cranitch & Jackie Daly in session in Jimmy’s and at the Lighthouse Bar, Moya Fitzgerald, Liam Lyons, Seanie Hogan, Donal & Katie Lyons.

The Jim Dowling Uilleann Pipe and Trad Festival takes place in Glengarriff every year around the 3rd week in June with this years festival running from Thursday 21st to the 24th June.

This year will see the 7th running of the festival which has grown from its humble beginnings in 2012 to what is is today, one of the finest line-ups of traditional Irish musicians you will find at any festival around the country. Taking place in the pubs, hotels and restaurants around the village of Glengarriff, you will never have to far to travel to get to the music, whether it is one of the bigger concerts or the more informal Piping For A Pint Session Trail that takes place throughout the weekend. There are also special events and workshops that also take place around the village, so something for everyone.

The festival will commence on Thursday night with Mick O’Brien and Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh in concert in The Park Hotel at 8pm. Sharon Shannon will be on stage in The Eccles Hotel on Friday night at 8pm. Then on Saturday, Iarla Ó Lionáird and Steve Cooney will be in concert in Glengarriff Church at 9.30pm.

With ticket numbers for the concerts being limited, it is advisable to book online by clicking Tickets if you wish to attend any of them.

If you’re thirsting for some great trad music, then the Piping For A Pint Session Trail is the place for you. The Sessions were a big hit last year and 2018 promises to be even bigger and better with some great acts, including Ronán Ó Snodaigh, Liam O’Connor, Sean McKeon, Caoimhin Ó Fearghail, Tom Oakes, Katrin Nicoll, Cór Chúil Aodha, Brendan Ring, Niall Keegan, The Diviners, Emer and Tadge Twomey, Caroline Keane, Tom Delany, The Reel Women, Des Geraghty and TRODA.

For those interested, there will also be Uilleann Pipe and Music Workshops occurring during the festival.

The legendary Con Curtin was one of the few people in the country with the honour of having a festival in their name in life. Con passed away on April 25th 2009 at 82 years of age, and every year the crowds flock to support the festival established and celebrated in his name. The Festival was established in 2001 to celebrate a very unusual “Sliabh Luachra” blossom of music, with a unique tempo and rhythm. Con Curtin was a master exponent of this Sliabh Luachra style.

The Festival kicks off on Friday night with a top class traditional concert at 8pm, with renowned group Breaking Trad in Brosna Parish Hall. They will be supported by world dancing sensation David Geaney former world champion dancer and of “Britain’s got Talent”, Brosna CCÉ and Storytelling by Billy O’Brien and John Murphy. Tickets cost €15

Saturday will be a busy day with music workshops taking place with top class tutors, from 11am to 2.30pm. Later on in the afternoon music enthusiasts will be treated to an array of recitals starting at 3pm and running until 7pm. The local church will be the venue for the traditional mass at 8pm Saturday evening.

Sunday will be a great family day with busking competitions for u9, u12 and u15. This will start at 1.30pm in the village square, before the mighty Stríolan Céilí Band start the Céilí at 3pm in the Brosna Parish Hall.

Blas has firmly established itself as one of Ireland’s most prestigious university accredited summer schools, drawing students from all over the world to spend two weeks gaining access to the expertise of some of Ireland’s finest artists. In addition to expert tuition and master classes, Blas students can expect a whole range of activities including lectures on Irish traditional music and dance topics, Irish language classes, lunchtime and evening concerts, sessions, céilithe, field-trips and above all, the unique opportunity to share tunes with some of Ireland’s leading traditional musicians.

Blas attracts musicians, singers and dancers (over the age of 16) who are already familiar with Irish traditions such as Irish Traditional music, song and dance and the Irish language. It acts as a means for preservation, promotion and development of these traditions and enables candidates who want to extend their technique, repertoire and knowledge therein. It also attracts many performers (and would-be performers) from other genres who find it beneficial to study with Blas as a form of induction and acculturation in the Irish traditions, before diving in at the deep end of the main traditional scene of endless sessions, céilithe, fleadhanna and festivals. Blas acts as an incubator, and forms a safe space in which to improve musicianship, song, or dance technique, and to learn more about the stylistic, social, and historic content of these traditions in a familiar educational campus setting.

The Craiceann Bodhrán Summerschool was launched in 2001, and has continued each year since then with over 1,000 students from 20 countries enjoying the Craiceann experience.

The Bodhrán Summerschool is arranged around a series of classes given by some of the world’s best bodhrán players and teachers. It also includes special workshops relating to the instrument itself, and traditional Irish music in general.

Every evening, music sessions are held in the island’s pubs, and students are welcome to bring their drum and join in.

On two evenings, concerts are performed by top-class bands. The first concert will feature Goitse featuring Colm Phelan. The other concert will feature one of the up and coming bands in Ireland, Fuinneamh (meaning ‘energy’ in Irish). Their bodhrán player, James O’Connor, is the current All Ireland bodhrán champion and a long time Craiceann student.
