The annual winter music school, Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh, now in its 15th year will take place in mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh (Ballyferriter) on Corca Dhuibhne (Dingle Peninsula) in Co. Kerry from the 20th to the 24th of February 2019.

This traditional music school attracts musicians from all over the world. Classes are held covering a wide range of instruments, including workshops in Sean-nós dancing and singing, as well as classes in Irish and Scottish Gáidhlig.

Over the 5 days there are concerts, sessions, singers’ nights, recitals, a pupils’ concert, guided walk, and all sorts of other events based on various aspects of our tradition.

Concerts will feature performances from many musicians including Liz Carroll, Mary McNamara, Steve Cooney, Tim Edey, Nell Ní Chróinín, Amanda Millen, Dermot McLaughlin, Sheila, Claire & Anna Friel, Eoin Ó Beaglaoich, Catherine O’Gorman, Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich, Maighread Stiúbhart, Ingrid Henderson, Allan MacDonald, Eithne Ni Chatháin, Cárthach MacCraith, Colm Murphy, Bríd Donnelly, Páraic Mac Donncha and plenty more.

Coming to Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh not only gives people the opportunity to get a taste of the local music and song, but it gives people a chance to experience the richness of the Irish language here in the heart of the Kerry Gaeltacht. People have the opportunity to attend a ‘ciorcal comhrá’ (conversation circle) where they can practice their cúpla focal, and for those whose ambitions lie further afield.

Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh are also delighted to have the opportunity to invite musicians from all over Ireland to come to Scoil Cheoil to take part in teaching classes and performing at concerts and recitals. Baile an Fheirtéaraigh is a small village with a great energy and a huge enthusiasm for music and is a great place to spend a few days enjoying the music and the company.

Tickets for the various events can be bought at the official opening, when registering for classes, at the information desk in the hotel from 10am – 5pm on Thursday, or at the door on the night unless previously sold out. THE BEST ADVICE IS TO BUY TICKETS IN ADVANCE AS THIS EVENT IS OFTEN SOLD OUT.

The Russell Memorial Weekend Festival is a music festival that is now in its 25th year. It is held annually in Doolin on the last full weekend in February. It is a remembrance celebration to the Russell family – Micho, Packie and Gussie Russell – the world-famous traditional musicians.

The weekend festival has now firmly established itself on the traditional festival calendar as one of the earliest festivals of the year, and hosts some of the best of traditional entertainment. It attracts musicians from around the country. The theme throughout the weekend is one of celebration as it showcases the new and vibrant music talents of Traditional Music, Set Dancing, and Sean-nós, which attracts a growing audience for Traditional Music.

The highlight of the festival is The Russell Concert which takes place on Saturday afternoon at 2pm in the Russell Cultural Centre. This year’s concert features Máirtín O’Connor, Donal Lunny and Zoë Conway. Tickets for the concert are €25 per person and include a food and wine reception. They are available at the Russell Centre. Doors Open from 1.30pm.

As well as the concerts, there will be Workshops happening on Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 12noon. Throughout the festival Traditional Music Sessions will be occurring in Doolin’s Pubs and the Hotel Doolin. All Musicians and Singers are welcome to partake. These sessions are marvelous free entertainment open for all to attend.

The Limerick Literary Festival which was formerly known as the Kate O’Brien Weekend, will this year celebrate its 35th edition. The Festival honours the life and works of Kate O’Brien who was one of Limerick’s most famous authors.

The Limerick Literary Festival seeks to promote Limerick nationally as a place of literary excellence and to provide a platform where readers can meet their favourite authors and other readers.

This years official opening will happen on Friday, February 22nd at 6pm in The Hunt Museum, and will be performed by Lara Marlowe.

The weekend will see lectures by Lyndall Gordon, Philippe Claudel, Liz Nugent, David Park, Lara Marlowe, Adam Wyeth, Emilie Pine, Niall MacMonagle, Louise O’Neill, Eileen Battersby, Martin Dyar, Clodagh Beresford Dunne and Richard Ford.

Popular events return such as the Kate O’Brien Lecture and Desert Island Books.

On Saturday, Dolans Warehouse will host the play, The Morning After The Life Before, by Ann Blake. This will be followed by a panel discussion.

It’s almost 25 years since Con Cassidy the great Teelin fiddle player left us. There will be a weekend of fiddle events in Teelin, Co. Donegal on the weekend of Fri 22nd to Sun 24th Feb.

The weekend will kick off in Coláiste Aoidh Mhic Bhricne – The Irish College on Friday night with the showing of various film clips of Con playing. This will commence at 8pm with a Music Session in the Rusty Mackerel afterwards.

Saturday will see Fiddle Classes running from 10am until 4pm in Coláiste Aoidh Mhic Bhricne – The Irish College. Cost per participant is €15 with registration commencing at 9.40am.

Then in the evening there will be a concert in Coláiste Aoidh Mhic Bhricne – The Irish College featuring Dermot Byrne, Martin McGinley, Maurice Bradley, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and other local musicians. The concert will begin at 8 pm with admission being €10pp. After the concert there will be a Music Session in the Rusty Mackerel afterwards.

The weekend will come to a conclusion on Sunday with a Music Session starting at 5pm in the Rusty Mackerel.

Now in its 20th year, The Gathering Traditional Festival is one of the foremost winter music festivals and satisfies the purist trad-head to the culturally curious. Attracting music fans from the US, Britain, France, Germany and all over Ireland

The Gathering features Concerts, Céilís, Seisiúns and Storytelling as well as Set Dancing, Singing and Instrument Masterclasses. The Festival is headquartered at The Gleneagle Hotel, and this year is bigger and better than ever.

The Céilís, which are a festival favourite, will feature Neily O’Connor, Uí Bhriain, Eddie Lee, Striolán Céilí Band, The Kilfenora Céilí Band and the Johnny Reidy Céilí Band. All Céilís will be held in The Gleneagle Hotel Ballroom with the exception of Wednesday nights Céilí with Neily O’Connor which will be held in the Scartaglen Club House.

Concerts this year include Altan, Mike McGoldrick, John Doyle and John McCusker, Dordán, Paddy Keenan, Frankie Gavin and Dermot Byrne, Bonnymen, A Tribute to Clare and Sliabh Luachra Music featuring the Lahawns with Andrew McNamara, The Conifers & Sliabh Luachra Band with Paudie O’Connor, Gatehouse, Jackie Daly, Matt Cranitch & Paul De Grae plus a whole lot more.

Taking place in the heart of the Connemara Ghaeltacht in Spiddal, Éigse an Spidéil is an annual community festival established in the late 1970’s to celebrate various aspects of the local culture, including Traditional Music, Sean-nós Singing and Dancing, Poetry and the Arts.

The highlight of Éigse an Spidéil is the Cheolchoirm Mhór na hÉigse which traditionally happens on the Saturday evening of the festival. This years Cheolchoirm will commence at 8pm in Seanscoil Sailearna and will feature the wonderful accordion player Conor Connolly from Clarinbridge accompanied by Phádraig Ó Dubhghaill. In the second half a new song, Fad Saoil will be played for the first time. The composer Johnny Óg Connolly has put music to 12 poems with the poet Joe Steve Ó Neachtain. The newly established choir ‘Cór Óige Chois Fharraige’ will be singing along with the singer Bríd Treasa Ní Ghaothín. Aisling Ní Neachtain will be directing the choir with accompaniment from Johnny Óg Connolly, Pádraig Ó Dubhghaill and Luisne Ní Neachtain.

During Éigse, there will also be Sessions occurring in the local pubs each night. These sessions are marvellous free entertainment open for all to attend.

The 2019 Corofin Trad Fest will kick off at 8pm on the 27th February where the legendary flute player Christy Barry will receive this years Hall of Fame Award in Teach Ceoil. This event is free with all welcome. As well as the presentation Christy Barry and friends will be performing on the night.

Teach Ceoil, the focal point for the festival, is a converted cottage providing an intimate venue which allows only a maximum of 120 people to attend.

The annual Ennis Book Club Festival was started in 2007 when a small group of local volunteers, in association with Clare County Library, identified the need for a new literary and social event to replace the demised Ennis October Arts Festival. Being members of a local Book Club, the wish was to create a literary event that focused primarily on readers and book lovers.

It has grown from strength to strength over the years and attracts a wide audience from all over Ireland, as well as overseas visitors, who gather to talk about and celebrate the books and literary topics they love.

As well as author readings and discussions, this festival offers quite a range of events, including debates on topical affairs, poetry readings, theatre, music, workshops and bookclub quizzes.

Kilkenny Tradfest, now in its seventh year, will present traditional music, song, dance and contemporary folk over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend at various venues across Kilkenny City including St. Canice’s Cathedral.

The headline act for this year’s TradFest is KGB – Paddy Keenan, Frankie Gavin and Dermot Byrne who will be supported by the CBS Trad Band past & present who will take to the stage in St. Canice’s Cathedral on Saturday at 7pm.

Over the course of the weekend there will be performances by Altan, Cry Monster Cry, Kilfenora Céilí Band, Téada with Séamus Begley, Trú, Iarla Ó Lionáird & Steve Cooney, Scullion, Caladh Nua, Yvonne Casey and Reel to Reel.

Amongst the highlights of the festival will be the Bulmers Trad Trail, which features numerous free gigs spread around the pubs and venues of Kilkenny. These sessions/gigs are marvellous free entertainment open for all to attend.

The Cork International Poetry Festival, which is one of the biggest annual poetry events on the Irish Festival calendar, kicks off this year on the 19th. It celebrates Cork as a vibrant poetry scene with international connections. The festival is produced by the Munster Literature Centre and is funded mainly by the Arts Council and Cork City Council.

Some of this years acts include award-winning poet Paul Duncan; Billy Collins, Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001 to 2003 and New York State Poet from 2004 to 2006; Sandra Beasley The 2019 John Montague International Poetry Fellow and Abigail Parry, whose poems have been set too music, translated into Spanish and Japanese, broadcast on the BBC and RTE Radio, and many more. As well as Readings there will be a number of Award Ceremonies and Workshops.

The Munster Literature Centre also produces the Cork International Short Story Festival each year.

Each year on the weekend after St. Patrick’s Day the Inishowen International Folk Song & Ballad Seminar takes place on the Inishowen Peninsula, in County Donegal. This year will mark its 30th year, with singers and lovers of traditional song coming from all over the world to celebrate the art of unaccompanied singing over the 4 days of the festival in performances, informal sessions, lectures and workshops in a community where the tradition is still alive and vibrant.

The highlight of the festival is the Concert on Saturday Night which will feature: The Quinn Family, Armagh; The McGonigle Family, Inishowen; Cloontagh and Rashenny National Schools; Patricia Flynn and Luke Cheevers; Members of the Inishowen Traditional Singers’ Circle.

The Festival is organised by the Inishowen Traditional Singers Circle (ITSC), who for several years have been collaborating in the Inishowen Song Project with the Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA). This involves collecting and archiving material related to traditional singing, including sound recordings, videos, photographs and lyrics. With songs traditionally handed down from singer to singer orally, this is a very important project.

The Festival is based in the Ballyliffin Hotel, Ballyliffin Village, with sessions held during the weekend in: McFeeley’s Bar, Clonmany; Market House, Clonmany; The North Pole Bar, Drumfries; Mac Tam’s Bar, Clonmany and The Rusty Nail, Crossconnell.
