Now in it’s 20th year, the Shannonside Winter Music Festival has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and this years event marks another step forward for this eclectic festival of the best in acoustic music.

Around 80 concerts, shows, pub gigs and sessions will occur between Thursday and Monday across 17 locations keeping the villages of Bunratty and Sixmilebridge bouncing and buzzing featuring the best of local talent and acts from far and wide.

This years headline concert will be The Metis Ireland Festival Concert featuring the legendary Matt Molloy & John Carty with Arty McGlynn, Brian McGrath & Mick Hanly.

This January sees the 5th annual Letterkenny Trad Week which will take place from January 19th to 27th. This festival brings some of the world’s finest traditional musicians from Ireland, England, Scotland and the United States to Donegal to perform in six brilliant concerts. Five will be at the Regional Cultural Centre with the final one at An Grianán Theatre.

Letterkenny Trad Week kicks off at the RCC on Saturday 19th with four leading Irish and Scottish musicians Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Siobhan Miller, Damien Mullane and Anna Massie as part of the Music Network Irish tour.

The first of two concerts featuring Coirm, the traditional youth ensemble from the Ceol na Coille music school, takes place at the RCC on Tuesday night. They will open for two stellar duos, Zoe Conway & John McIntyre and Seamus McGuire & John Lee. BBC Folk Award winning Irish singer, Daoirí Farrell will be performing at the RCC on Wednesday night. Then on Thursday night, Irish Manchester duo of piper Mike McGoldrick and fiddler Dezi Donnelly play the RCC. Veteran US bluegrass outfit Special Consensus will be in concert at the RCC on Friday night.

The week comes to an end on a high note, with Donegal’s globetrotting traditional group, Altan who will be performing at the An Grianán Theatre on Sunday night. Altan will be joined by Coirm who will perform the composition specially written for them by Altan’s Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, and the world premiere of a new composition written for them by Altan’s Martin Tourish.

TradFest is Ireland’s largest festival of trad, folk music and beyond showcasing not only the wealth and variety of Irish musical talent but also top international acts. It started out as a small niche trad festival back in 2006 and from its modest beginnings has gone from strength to strength over the past decade. It offers concert goers unique opportunities to experience live music in some of Dublin’s most historic places. From the breathtaking nave of St. Patrick’s Cathedral to the grandeur of City Hall. This years TradFest takes place from Wednesday 23rd to Sunday 27th of January.

The tenth Ballincollig Winter Music Festival brings together a fantastic mix of artists and events mainly centred around the festival hub at The White Horse.

The Festival kicks off on Wednesday, January 23rd at 8.30pm with the Delines. The supporting act will be John Blek. Also appearing at this years Festival will be The Grits & Gravy Stringband, Two Time Polka, Cathy Davey, Jerry Douglas and Greenshine. The 10th Anniversary Concert will feature special guests Andy Irvine, Dónal Lunny, Paddy Glackin & Lisa O’Neill. The closing concert will be Tim O’Brien & Jan Fabricius with support act Stayin’ Down Shoes.

The White Horse Guitar Club will be performing at the Cork Opera House on Thursday the 24^th at 8pm.

A series of workshops covering Fiddle, Sean-Nós Singing and Contemporary Songwriting will take place at Gaelscoil Uí Riordáin on Saturday the 27th. They will commence at 10am with a finishing time of 1pm. There will also be a workshop covering Sean-Nós Dancing which will take place at The White Horse. Finishing times for the workshops may vary, please discuss with the relevant tutor on the day. The cost per workshop is €10. Tickets are available at the door but advance booking is recommended to guarantee a place.

During the festival Trad Sessions will be held in the Main bar at The White Horse. These sessions are marvellous free entertainment open for all to attend.

Now in its Seventh year, the annual Doolin Writers’ Weekend takes place commencing on the 25th January 2019 and will last until the 27th. Many well known artists and writers including J.M Synge, George Bernard Shaw, Dylan Thomas, Augustus John and Oliver St. John Gogarty have spent time in Doolin over the years.

Doolin Writers’ Weekend this year will consist of workshops, readings, advice from publishing industry insiders, music sessions, open mic and of course wonderful food and hospitality from the Hotel Doolin team all weekend long.

The programme for this years Doolin Writers’ Weekend will feature Anthony Glavin, Annemarie Ní Churreáin, Susan Tomaselli, Jinx Lennon, Little John Nee, Anna Kelly, Danielle McLaughlin, Colm Keegan, Stephen Murray, Dave Lordan, Lisa Harding, June Caldwell, Stephen Sexton, Sophie Coyle, Nuala O’Connor, Elaine Cosgrove, Lucy Luck, Michael Naghten Shanks, Joanna Walsh, Abby Oliveira, Brendan Murphy, Jessica Traynor, Oisín Fagan and Anakana Schofield.

At this years event, Annmarie Ní Chuireann will judge the Poetry competition, Danielle McLoughlin will judge the Short Story competition and this years new category, Video Poem will be judged by Dave Lordan.

During the Doolin Writers’ Weekend there will be a series of workshops covering short fiction, novel writing, creative nonfiction, spoken word, screenwriting and poetry.

In the few short years of its existence IMBOLC International Music Festival has grown to become one of Northern Ireland’s leading folk and world music festivals. Whilst still firmly rooted in the musical cultures of this island, the festival has grown in depth and breadth and now encompasses music genres ranging from folk, traditional and roots to jazz, contemporary and world music.

The festival comprises an extensive programme of events including Concerts, Workshops, Masterclasses, Choral events, Events for Children, Community events, Films Talks & Lectures, Session trail, Band camp, Dance Workshops and much more. It will feature performances from world-class musicians from Ireland, Sweden, America, Canada and Scotland.

IMBOLC 2019 consists of a multi-layered events programme in a range of venues across Derry city including The Glassworks, Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, Christ Church, Guildhall and Millennium Forum. This February sees the 4th annual Féile na Tána getting underway from the 1st until the 3rd of February. It promises to be a packed weekend of Traditional Irish Music, Song & Dance for all ages with Concerts, Workshops and Music sessions.

Kicking off this years Féile na Tána will be a concert featuring the Traditional Orchestra of Scoil Naomh Lorcan, Omeath. The concert will start at 7pm in St. Michael’s Hall, Newry Street, Carlingford. This will be followed by a young musicians’ session in St. Michael’s Hall.

On Saturday a series of workshops will be held at Bush Post Primary School which is about a 10 minute drive from Carlingford. The workshops are limited to 15 places per workshop and are for players with 3 years or more experience with the exception of the easy tin whistle class, singing and Sean-nós dancing. Registration for the workshops will start at 1.30pm with the workshops commencing at 2pm and finishing at 5pm.

The Tutors this year are, for Fiddle: Caoimhin O’Raghallaigh & Zoe Conway; Tin Whistle (intermediate): Mary Bergin; Tin Whistle (beginner): TBC; Uileann Pipes: Mick O’Brien; Harp: Laoise Kelly; Flute: Eamon de Barra; Accordion: Mairtin O’Connor; Concertina: Edel Fox; Guitar: John McIntyre; Singing: Mairead Ní Mhaonaigh; Banjo: Cathal Hayden; Bodhrán: Robbie Harris and Sean nós Dancing: Edwina Guckian.

In the evening at 7pm there will be a Tutor Recital featuring the workshop tutors at St. Michael’s Hall.

Sunday afternoon at 3pm will see the Festival Concert in St. Michael’s Hall. On stage will be Cathal Hayden on fiddle and Máirtín O’Connor on accordion. The concert will also be feature several exceptional young musicians (Féile na Tána scholarships).

Over Féile na Tána, there will be traditional music sessions occurring in The Village Hotel and The Four Seasons Hotel. Participating in them will be some of Ireland’s finest musicians. These sessions are marvellous free entertainment open for all to attend. Please visit Programme for details.

Held on the second Sunday of February each year, this year will mark the 24th Annual Tipperariana Book Fair. It will take place in Fethard Ballroom on Sunday, February 10th.

This book fair has grown to be one of the largest book fairs in the country and attracts dealers and collectors from all over Ireland. At the fair you will find a comprehensive variety of books to purchase ranging from 10c to €500+ antique collector items.

The fair is a great place to find that book that you may have been searching for, and if it is not available on the day, then you can be sure the dealers will assist in finding it for you.

During the fair, a no obligation appraisal service will be available, so if you have valuable books at home and are interested in getting them valued, then bring them along on the day.

A café will be open in the Ballroom all day for refreshments. There will also be a raffle with lots of prizes to be won.

Entry to the fair is €2 and is charged at the door.

The Limerick Literary Festival which was formerly known as the Kate O’Brien Weekend, will this year celebrate its 35th edition. The Festival honours the life and works of Kate O’Brien who was one of Limerick’s most famous authors.

The Limerick Literary Festival seeks to promote Limerick nationally as a place of literary excellence and to provide a platform where readers can meet their favourite authors and other readers.

This years official opening will happen on Friday, February 22nd at 6pm in The Hunt Museum, and will be performed by Lara Marlowe.

The weekend will see lectures by Lyndall Gordon, Philippe Claudel, Liz Nugent, David Park, Lara Marlowe, Adam Wyeth, Emilie Pine, Niall MacMonagle, Louise O’Neill, Eileen Battersby, Martin Dyar, Clodagh Beresford Dunne and Richard Ford.

Popular events return such as the Kate O’Brien Lecture and Desert Island Books.

On Saturday, Dolans Warehouse will host the play, The Morning After The Life Before, by Ann Blake. This will be followed by a panel discussion.
