Ceol na gCruach is a fantastic weekend of traditional music, song and dance held annually in The Glen Tavern – Dinny’s. Located near Glenties, Co. Donegal it is regarded by some as a mecca for Irish traditional music with a particular fondness for the Donegal fiddle style. Expect everything from songs, poems and dancing all embodied with true Celtic spirit. It’s slightly off the beaten track and can be found located in the middle of the mountains just a few miles from the Glenties but that just adds to the magic.
Joining the well-known local fiddle music family, the Campbells, Peter and Jimmy, Ronan Galvin, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Nia Byrne, The Friel Sisters, Antón Mac Gabhann, Caitlín Nic Gabhann, Ciaran Ó Maonaigh, Patrick McMenamin, Iarla O’Donnell, Denise Boyle, Tara Connaghan, Jim & Fiona Byrne, Bernard Kelly and Friends, Patrick Mac Cionnaith, Danny Meehan, Eileen and Frank Sweeney.
The opening session will begin on Friday night in the Glen Tavern at 9pm, featuring the Young Campbells continuing the Ceol na gCruach traditions and all musicians.
On Saturday, there will be classes in Fiddle and Dance between 10.30am and 1pm. This will be followed by a talk on local music and traditions between 2pm and 3pm. Then at 3.15pm there will be a bus tour to The Croaghs featuring music and story-telling on the bus, and a dance at the crossroads. At 8.30pm the festival continues with Rince Scioból (Barn Dance) i Scioból Dinny’s in aice le Teach Tábhairne an Ghleanna followed by a session in the Glen Tavern.
Sunday will see a walking tour starting at 1pm and a few tunes at the hearth in Condy’s hut. Ceol na gCruach festival is sponsored by Ealaínn na Gaeltachta and Donegal County Council.
