The Donegal Fiddle Summer School will take place in the scenic village of Glencolmcille (Gleann Colm Cille) on the southwest coast of Co. Donegal from Mon 29th July to Friday 2nd August.
This specialist non-residential music school is held in the first full week of August. It is organised by Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí. Up to 120 students can be accepted in 11 graded classes covering from beginner to advanced level which are taught by leading exponents of Donegal fiddle music. The classes run from 10am – 4pm each day.
The classes work on learning by ear, though some of the teachers can read music and will help out music readers who struggle with learning by ear. Students will be strongly encouraged and helped to become used to the traditional system of learning by ear.
During the week there will be a couple of fiddle concerts featuring some of the teachers from the school and other guest fiddlers along with dancing, talks and recitals. Many music sessions will take place in the local pubs and sometimes outdoors (depending on the weather). Students can come along and bring their instruments and practice in the evening time what they learnt during the day.
There are also lots of music sessions in the local pubs and sometimes outdoors (depending on the weather).
