Event Details
Subject to Covid restrictions, Meitheal Summer School 2021 will run from July 19th to 23rd at St. Flannan’s College in Ennis, Co. Clare. In the meantime, we urge all young musicians to stay safe and use some of your time to engage in music in new and innovative ways through electronic media or with others while practising social distancing.
The closing date for applications for this years Meitheal is March 26th.
This years Summer School is open to musicians who are 13 years of age or over on Jan 1st 2020. Over the week students will live and breathe music under expert guidance with all attendees experiencing…
- Masterclasses
- Arrangement workshops
- Composition workshops
- Trad Orchestra
- Various other activities
- Finale Concert
The instrument workshops cater for players of various abilities but they are not suitable for beginners. Players need to have at least four years of experience and be able to play reels at dance tempo with ornamentation. All applicants must send a recording with their application so that they can be graded into appropriate classes beforehand. Meitheal is tough going. Don’t come unless you have a trad music obsession!
This years tutors are Sylvain Barou: Flute & Pipes, Dylan Carlos: Fiddle, Brid Harper: Fiddle, Caitlin Nic Gabhann: Concertina, Aisling Lyons: Harp, Cathal Ó Curráin: Fiddle, Sharon Howley: Fiddle & Cello, Gavin Strappe: Banjo and Jos Kelly: Accordion.
At Meitheal, students are so busy that sessions tend to be of limited duration squeezed between various activities or for an hour before bed. However, they provide a great opportunity for social mixing and enjoyment.
There is an upper limit of around 10 in all workshops, but most are smaller. Enrolments are accepted on a first-come-first-served basis, so please apply before March 26th to ensure your place. Please note that Meitheal reserves the right to cancel individual workshop options if we have not had sufficient applicants by the closing date. Should this occur, a full refund will be provided or a place in an alternative workshop will be offered.
During the week, students also attend concerts given by tutors and other artistes and various workshops and presentations. They will also perform with tutors in the Finale Concert.
Students partaking in Meitheal will have the prospect of consideration for a place on the CCE Tour of Ireland later in the year, along with other opportunities, such as the making of a programme for RnaG, a scholarship to Blas and solo and group performances at numerous festivals.
