Music Under the Mountains 2018

Music Under the Mountains is an annual festival of traditional Irish music hosted in Hollywood, Co. Wicklow. The festival has been in running since 1991 and over the years has attracted some of the country’s biggest names in traditional Irish music including The Chieftans, Altan, Liam O’Flynn, The Kilfenora Ceili Band and Martin Hayes to name but a few!

The festival generally runs during the third weekend of September each year providing a weekend packed full of concerts and sessions hosted by local and visiting musicians. This year it will run from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd of September. Since 1996 ‘Music Under the Mountains’ aim has been to support The Laura Greaves Music School, which provides musical tuition to children in the greater Hollywood area.

Weekend tickets covering admission to all events requiring tickets are available for just €45 or for individual events requiring tickets and can be obtained by visiting Tickets.

This years Music Under the Mountains Festival will commence Friday night at 8pm with a Concert in St. Kevin’s Church of Ireland featuring two giants of Breton Music for an intimate performance with Jean-Michel Veillon on Flute and Yvon Riou on Guitar. The admission fee for this concert is €20.

There will be a series of Workshops held on Saturday morning in the Hollywood Centre starting at 10.30am. The Workshops and Tutors will be Flute: Jean-Michel Veillon; Guitar: Yvon Riou and Fiddle: Paul Bradley. The cost per workshop is €10.

In the afternoon, the Music In The Woods sponsored walk will occur. For those who wish to participate, meet up in the village at 2pm. The walk will be through the scenic Hollywood forest to the sound of live traditional music. A  true musical trail!

Later on in the afternoon at 4pm, a presentation titled The Irish Fiddle Celebrated, about the Irish national fiddle tradition will be given by master fiddlers Paddy Glackin and Dermot McLaughlin. This will be held in the Hollywood Centre.

The Concert Saturday evening will be held in St. Kevin’s Church of Ireland and start at 7pm. It will feature Seán Óg Potts  on Uilleann Pipes, Paul McGrattan on Flute, Paddy Glackin on Fiddle and Dermot McLaughlin on Fiddle. The admission fee for this concert is €20.

Later on in the evening at 8pm there will be a session in the Hollywood Inn with music from Brittany with Tom Lemmonier and Friends.

On Sunday at 12.30pm in Tutty’s Bar, Helen Diamond will be hosting the Annual Singing Session. All singers are welcome to participate.

At 6pm in St. Kevins Church of Ireland, the Closing Concert for this years Music Under the Mountains Festival will commence with Gay McKeon on Uilleann Pipes. The admission fee for this concert is €20.

Later on in the evening at 8pm there will be a session in the Hollywood Inn with more music from Brittany with Tom Lemmonier and Friends.
