The O’Carolan Harp and Traditional Music Festival is held annually in Keadue, County Roscommon every August Bank Holiday with the Summer School preceding the Festival. This years Summer School will run from Monday July 30th until Friday August 3rd with the Festival running from Friday August 3rd until Monday August 6th.
The Festival was started in Keadue in 1978, to commemorate the famous Harper Turlough O’Carolan who lived in the area and is buried in Kilronan Cemetery which overlooks the scenic Lough Meelagh on the outskirts of the village. Keadue is a small village of about 200 people located on the shores of Lough Meelagh at the foot of the Arigna Mountains.
The Festival includes Concerts, CéilÃthe, Tuition on the Harp, Set Dancing, Harp Recitals and a Harp Competition. The Harp Competition has been sponsored every year since it was started by local business Arigna Fuels Ltd. The Festival also features an internationally renowned Door Dancing Competition.
The O’Carolan Summer School is held on the week preceding the August Bank Holiday Weekend. The popularity of the Summer School is increasing year by year. The School features expert tuition by accomplished, well known music, dance and song tutors each morning with informative lectures and workshops arranged for the afternoons. Opportunities to play in sessions occur every evening in various venues around the village.
The classes and tutors for this years school will be for Harp: Laoise Kelly, Eilish Lavelle and Alisha McMahon; Flute: Michael Hurley; Bodhrán: Junior Davey; Button Accordion: Dan Brouder; Banjo: Angelina Carbury; Tin Whistle: Padraig and Lorraine Sweeney; Fiddle: Mossie Martin and Claire Bohan; Concertina: Francis Cunningham; Traditional Singing: Fionnuala Maxwell; Set Dancing: Ger Butler and Sean Nós Dancing: Patrick Devane.
