This year sees the 27th incarnation of the Patrick O’Keeffe Traditional Music Festival. Over the years the town of Castleisland has seen the very best of traditional musicians come to honour the memory of Patrick O’Keeffe and Sliabh Luachra music.
The festival was set up in 1993 to mark the 30th anniversary of the death of Patrick O’Keeffe the Sliabh Luachra Fiddle Master. The aim of the festival was and is to preserve the unique Sliabh Luachra musical culture and promote traditional music in the area.
The festival consists of Recitals, Concerts, Workshops and Classes for Traditional Instruments as well as Singing, Lectures, Exhibitions and a Ceilí Mór.
Workshops will cover Fiddle, Accordion, Banjo, Flute, Concertina, Uileann Pipes and Singing. Intermediate and improvers/advanced levels are catered for. The venue for the Workshops is St. Patrick’s Secondary School, College Road. Registration will be at 9.30am with Classesfrom 10am until 1pm. The Tutors for the workshops are Connie O’Connell, Peter Browne, Paudie O’Connor, Brian Mooney, Liam O’Brien, Eamonn O’Riordan, Derek Hickey and Emma O’Leary.
During the Patrick O’Keeffe Traditional Music Festival, there will be traditional music sessions occurring throughout the town in the local Pubs. Participating in them will be some of Ireland’s finest musicians. These sessions will be happening at different times, day and night, and are marvelous free entertainment open for all to attend. All musicians are invited to join in one of the many sessions or initiate their own.
