This year will see the 46th annual Willie Clancy Summer School (Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy) in Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare and will run from Saturday the 7th through to Sunday the 15th of July. It will have musical instrument and dance classes, lectures, workshops, recitals and céilithe all through the week. It commemorates the town’s best-known Uilleann Piper, Willie Clancy.
Performing the official opening ceremony will be the renowned button accordion player Joe Burke in the Community Centre at 8pm on Saturday the 7th July which will be followed by The ‘Breandán Breathnach’ memorial lecture.
An extremely popular event, students come from all over the world to attend. The school is focused around the teaching of instruments and set dancing in formal Workshops/Classes, but stresses the value of the oral/aural tradition. It is geared towards the hundreds of improving and competent musicians, singers and dancers attending the school.
The Workshops/Classes happen during the mornings during the week and are given by up to 150 top players/performers/teachers on Uilleann Pipes, Tin Whistle, Flute, Fiddle, Concertina, Banjo, Button Accordion, Melodeon, Harmonica, Harp, Traditional Singing, Spoken Irish and Scots Gaelic and Set Dancing. For details regarding enrollment for a workshop/class please click Enrollment.
In the afternoons, lectures at the Community Centre address the cultural and intellectual side of traditional music and then in the evenings there will be Recitals and Céilithe.
Alongside the organised activities, the place will be humming with trad sessions which draw a considerable audience due to their extraordinary quality. These sessions run non-stop, day and night on the streets and in the pubs over the week.
This is without doubt an unmissable event if you have any interest in Irish music.
